Genting Highlands, an hour drive from Kuala Lumpur, is a famous destination for locals who wish to escape the urban heat and relax in a higher altitude retreat. Nestled on top of Titiwangsa Mountains at an elevation of about 1,800m, it was built by Genting Group (Resorts World) in 1969 and expanded since then. This lavish resort boasts high-end hotels, casino, themed parks and a scenery to die for.

How to get there

We took the LRT from KL until Gombak station. From there, we took a bus to Genting Highlands. It took about an hour of zigzags and fog. But don’t worry, roads in Malaysia are very good. We reached the boarding point of the skyway, presented our prepaid tickets and <del>flew</del> rode all the way to the top. We were up in the air for 30 minutes and the view was breathtaking. A Skyway cable car can fit 8 passengers at one time and cuts off the travel time to more than half. If you are afraid of heights, you can opt to take a bus which, of course, takes longer travel time.

Click here for the bus and skyway schedule and ticket prices. I only spent MYR18.80 for a round tip fare from Gombak to Genting Highlands. There is no entrance fee to the resort. Outdoor theme park ticket (ride all you can) costs MYR50. Food and drinks can be as cheap as MYR15.

What to do

Genting Highlands is a huge complex of hotels, shopping malls, casino, theme parks and restaurants. I thought we were just going to a shopping mall; I didn’t expect that it is a mini-city in itself. You can check in at one of the hotels to make the most out of what the place offers. Since we didn’t have much time, we just spent a whole day there.

1. Stroll inside the First World Indoor Theme Park.

2. Feel the adrenaline rush from the rides of the First World Outdoor Theme Park.

3. Check in at one of the hotels.

First World Hotel

4. Watch cultural shows. Below is a video I took of a group composed of different nationalities dancing to the tune of an Indian song and with me and my Chinese Malay friend exclaiming our admiration in Japanese. How diverse could that be?

5. Try your luck at the casino. I did but I wasn’t able to find mine. We decided to cap off our day in the casino and played a bit at the cheapest table we could find. I thought Genting Highlands will be kind enough to a foreigner like me and double my money. I ended up losing all (it’s not much!) after getting impatient with my series of losses. Patience is a virtue and luck follows through, I guess. After whining about my lost money, I cheered up myself by taking a breath outside and admiring the beauty that embraces this commercial complex.

5. Don’t forget to pause for a while, smell the flowers and enjoy the view.

Early this year, the Indian Embassy in the Philippines announced that it has started outsourcing its visa processing to BLS International effective January 12, 2012. The embassy no longer accepts personal applications and all visa applications must go thru BLS International. Continue reading »

My first Indian tourist visa issued last 2010.

Getting an Indian visa for Filipinos these days is more difficult than before. When I applied for a tourist visa in 2010, I only spent at an hour inside the embassy to file my application and picked it up after 3 working days. Both were done in a breeze. But early this year, the Indian Embassy in the Philippines announced that it has started outsourcing its visa processing to BLS International effective January 12, 2012. (Read the notice here.) THE EMBASSY NO LONGER ACCEPTS PERSONAL APPLICATIONS AND ALL VISA APPLICATIONS MUST GO THRU BLS INTERNATIONAL. Only passport services for Indian nationals are accepted at the embassy. This reminder is nowhere in the websites of both the embassy and the agency although the outsourcing announcement has been posted. I think it is clearer to state such reminder. Japan Embassy in Manila, for example, specifically states that they do not accept visa applications except for special cases.

BLS International is located along 601-A (6th Floor), One Corporate Plaza, Arnaiz Avenue, Makati City. It is a walking distance from Walter Mart and St. John Bosco Parish Church. When I went there yesterday, confident that I have followed all the instructions posted on the website and all the requirements for a tourist visa, I thought I will only take about an hour to file my application. How wrong I was. I took 4.5 hours!!! The office of the agency is too small; it could probably sit 30 people comfortably. But beyond that, the room gets packed. They have 3 personnel at the counter who check the documents, receive payments and issue receipts, 1 security guard cum photocopy operator, 2 other staff whose responsibilities I am quite unsure about and a manager. The good thing, which somehow compensates the slow process,is that all the personnel are very accommodating but <del>sometimes</del> oftentimes they become too accommodating that they lose the entire system altogether. The manager was very friendly and understanding and even asked me “Dear, are your documents completed now?” a couple of times. How sweet is that?! :)

As long as you arrive early and have all the requirements, I am sure that even with this new procedure, applying for a visa would be easy. Anyway, for you not to suffer those excruciating hours of sitting idly, here are some tips I can offer based on my experience.

STEP 1: PREPARE YOUR APPLICATION DOCUMENTS:

a. Download the application form from here. Accomplish 1 set of form accordingly. DO NOT WRITE N/A, NO DETAILS, or similar answers. WRITE “NO” IF YOU DON’T HAVE AN APPLICABLE ANSWER TO A QUESTION EVENTHOUGH IT’S NOT A YES OR NO QUESTION.

b. Attach 2 pieces of 2X2 ID pictures. Ideally, paste one on the space for ID and staple the other one beside it.

c. Attach 2 copies of the first page of your passport. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months, or better yet for at least a year.

d. Attach 1 copy of confirmed roundtrip tickets. NO ROUNDTRIP TICKETS, NO VISA.

e. Attach 1 copy of your bank certificate to prove that you have enough finances to cover your travel expenses in India.

f. If you have a sponsor from India, attach 1 copy of your sponsor’s SIGNED invitation letter and bank certificate/s. An invitation letter with itinerary is better.

g. Staple all these together, in order, then you’re good to go.

h. If you are submitting on behalf of other people, make sure that you have their LETTER AUTHORIZING YOU TO FILE THE APPLICATION ON THEIR BEHALF WITH THEIR SIGNATURES, YOUR SIGNATURE AND A PHOTOCOPY OF YOUR ID.

i. If you are submitting for a group, in my case for my family, MAKE SURE THAT YOU PROVIDE THE DOCUMENTS FOR EACH OF THEM. For example, if you have an invitation letter from India, photocopy this invitation letter and attach to each applicant.

STEP 2: SUBMITTING YOUR APPLICATION

j. BLS International accepts applications from 9:30am-12:30pm, Mondays thru Fridays, except holidays. Their website says until 1:30pm but they have a cut-off at 12:30pm. They will no longer accept applicants beyond that time. I advise going there as early as you can to get ahead of the line. I assume if you are the first one, the process won’t take you 30 minutes provided that you have all the documents ready. (Note: Bring all original documents with you, if possible.)

k. Sign the logbook at the table near the entrance. A clerk who will check your documents will call you in order of the logged applicants and will give you a number depending on the visa category you are applying for (e.g. Tourist #28) together with your documents. So it is important that you have filled up the forms properly so as not to slow down the process for the others. IF YOU HAVE MADE A MISTAKE IN YOUR APPLICATION FORM, CROSS IT OUT AND COUNTERSIGN.

l. With your corrected documents and PASSPORT, wait for your number to be called at the counter. Once your turn comes, the counter clerk will again check your documents and issue a receipt upon payment.

m. PROCESSING FEE FOR TOURIST VISA IS P2,100 PLUS A BLS INTERNATIONAL FEE OF P148. Only Peso currency will be accepted. Click here for information regarding other types of visa.

n. Together with the receipt, the clerk will return a stamped photocopy of your passport. Bring these when you claim back your passport.

o. Processing time for Philippine passport holders is 3 working days but they asked me to be back after 4 working days. I filed my application on Tuesday and I can claim in only on next Tuesday.

STEP 3: CLAIMING YOUR VISA

p. BLS International releases passports/visas from 4:30pm-5:30pm. This process is easier and there are fewer people. Sign the logbook and wait for your turn to be called.

q. Before leaving, make sure that your visa details are all correct.

OTHER IMPORTANT REMINDERS

r. MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE ALL YOUR REQUIREMENTS AS YOU DON’T WANT TO PAY FOR THE FOLLOWING AT THE AGENCY: Printing fee per page is P50. Receiving a fax per page is P40. Photocopying per page is P2.50. And you have to log on a sheet of paper every time you avail these services.

s. PLEASE REMOVE ANY PASSPORT COVER BEFORE YOU HAND IN YOUR APPLICATION. Taking off your passport cover at the counter takes a significant amount of time, seriously!

t. Bring anything to occupy you while waiting.

u. Bring a fan, it could get a little dense in there.

v. Bring food in case you get stuck. (I was so hungry at that time that I was already seeing my fellow applicants turning into fried chickens. Hahaha!)

w. Finally, please don’t make a scene. If you are in a hurry and pissed by the slow process, have patience. It is annoying for other applicants who try to be calm despite hunger, heat and lost time. Trust me, setting a rampage won’t help AT ALL. Just think that once you get your tourist visa, everything else in your travel will be incredible, like INDIA! :)

Safe travels and see you in India!

If only I was fast enough to catch him and return this train pass to him.

A sample of train pass posted on the ad wall at Masjid Jamek station. I find it hilarious. And I wonder whether he'd seen this. :) Proves that he's not the only Justin Timberlake out there haha!

If that catchy title brought you here, congratulations to me. But this is not about him, at all, or perhaps I could make an unusual connection if you will. This post is about how easy it is commuting around Kuala Lumpur that even Justin Timberlake could swiftly sing and dance his way through. There you go!

L-R: Prepaid loading machines for my train pass; I have 15MYR in here, good enough for 2 days; At Masjid Jamek, a major station for connecting to other lines.

I’m not a fan of commuting. I have to blame Metro Manila for such upbringing. When I was in Japan, I used to dream that my country would soon have convenient transportation modes available for the masses. I hope we have a much improved MRT system. I hope they limit city buses. I hope jeepney routes are much more organized at least. When I was in Kuala Lumpur, all those hopes turned into reality for me.

Inside KL's MRT

From my friend’s house, it’s only a less than 10-minute ride to the nearest MRT station. KL doesn’t have much lines but enough to make commuting convenient for everyone. Commuting was a breeze and I forgot how many times I told my friend that I wish Metro Manila offers the same. They have a subway and a monorail as well.

KL's Monorail

I recommend travelers who wish to visit KL to try out MRTs instead of taxis. (But sometimes you have no choice but to take taxis to the nearest station especially if you don’t have the luxury of time.) Taxis are more expensive, of course, though more convenient but I find haggling stressful. I consider taking mass transportations like this as an avenue to bring me closer to the the daily life of the locals; one way of immersing into the culture of the country you are visiting. Plus, you get to see visual treats such as these:

Cool graffiti near the station...

and more.

Hotel Review: Living like Peranakans at Baba House, Malacca, Malaysia

The Baba House along Jeeren Street is surely not the cheapest in Malacca but if you want to relive the Peranakan lifestyle, this is probably where the closest you can get. The furniture, decorations and other installations reflect the ostentatious taste of Peranakans. The facade looks small but the inside stretches to the other side of the block.

At the entrance of Baba House clutching a book on Malacca's history and must-visit spots.

The alternative entrance at the other side of the block.

The reception area.

The Cost and the Worth

A night stay at a Superior King Room costs 158MYR and a deposit of 50MYR which will be returned upon checking out. My friend and I shared the room and split the cost. It is pricey compared to budget hotels in the area offering almost half of the price. But since I was able to get free accommodation all throughout my stay in Malaysia, thanks to my friend and her family, I didn’t think twice on splurging for this one. And I didn’t regret it. The place is close to Jonker Street and other destinations. Besides, Malacca is a walkable city so I enjoyed strolling around cobbled streets while admiring the quaint structures. I believe walking is the best way to enjoy Malacca and feast in its visual treats.

L-R: My friend, Mei; a beautiful mirror hangs on the wall of the reception area; the interior of the elevator; and me.

The Room and Everything that Comes with it

The room we occupied has a king-sized bed, a television, closets, and other basic furniture. They have free wifi and they have a desktop beside the reception area with internet connection free of charge. It was useful when I had to transfer the pictures from my friend’s memory card to mine. The room had free coffee, tea and water. Basic toiletries and hot and cold shower were also available. I admire the details of the room. The sink is lovely and even the door knobs are intricately decorated. You could even purchase any of the decorations you fancy if you want to bring them home as souvenirs. I didn’t encounter much guests and I felt like we are the only ones in the whole hotel. Alright, that is an exaggeration but thinking about it, especially in such an old place, is a bit eerie.

There’s free breakfast. With a handful of guests, I didn’t expect it to be varied but we had more than enough. We had good breakfast in the morning which readied us for a whole day of walking.

The staff are very friendly. From the receptionist, to the housekeeper, to the lady in charge of the small restaurant, we felt really at home. We asked for a change of bedsheet and in less than 5 minutes a staff arrived. (There’s no tipping culture in Malaysia and when I asked my friend whether I should hand one, she responded in wit: “Don’t ruin the market.” I couldn’t agree more.) They also assisted us in hiring a cab that will take us to the bus station, without any additional fee.

The corridors of Baba House.

The Interior Design

The hotel has a lot of open areas for relaxation and internalizing the history attached to it. We enjoyed going around it admiring the photos of Peranakans from the past, the random sculptures and wooden furniture, the potted plants and bricked walls. It is also noticeable how they incorporated Dutch and English styles into their own. The hotel itself is a worth a visit when you are in Malacca if you want to glance at how the Peranakans lived during the colonial era.

The history of Malacca may be permanently inked onto our books but places like this give us the opportunity to go beyond reading and seeing and open up a chance of feeling the connection between the past and the present.

Tangerines. Fireworks. Dragon Dances. Red Lanterns. Incense.

I was in a bus with my friend heading to Malacca to celebrate Chinese New Year last January 2012. It was my first time to celebrate CNY and I was eager as a beaver. There was a slight congestion of traffic but not as bad as the ones we have to endure in Manila every Christmas season. My friend told me that Malacca is a popular destination every CNY because most Malaccans are Chinese and visitors from the neighboring Singapore travel by land to Malacca (about 3-hour trip). Add to that the other curious travelers and history buffs like me who want to see this UNESCO Cultural Heritage Site.

I enjoyed Malacca. And I cannot think of any better way to celebrate CNY than the Malaccan style.

How to celebrate CNY in Malacca?

1. Tangerines, anyone?

Enjoy the free tangerines. In fact, tangerines are everywhere. My friend told me that it is a symbol of luck and prosperity for the Chinese. I read from here that it is actually a language pun because its Chinese word sounds like the Chinese word for “luck”. Hotels and restaurants give out free tangerines and I was a happy traveler; no need to buy desserts!

With my friend, Mei, showing off our free tangerines!

2. Fireworks still works.

Look up to the sky once in a while; you don’t want to miss the random fireworks. I expected grand displays as I am used to the annual World Pyro Olympics in Manila. But I understand the simplicity of them since Malaysia banned firecrackers and fireworks starting 1978 for security and safety reasons. However, the use of smuggled fireworks and firecrackers from Thailand are evident the morning after.

3. Dance like a Dragon!

And be lucky all year ’round! Ok, watching the dragon dance will do. It is a staple for celebrations among Chinese as they symbolize themselves as descendants of the dragon. Exuding power and dignity, the dance is an art in itself, more than its historical and identity representations. I immediately felt lucky when I watched the dragon dance as we welcome the dragon year. Lucky coincidence!

4. Let the Red Lanterns Hang for a While…

…figuratively. The streets of Malacca were lined up with brightly lit red lanterns. I have never seen as many red lanterns before in my life so I find it really beautiful. I cannot count how many photos of them I took. Get out of the crowd, stop for a while, and trace the lanterns with your sight.

5. Light an Incense.

Go to a Chinese temple, if you have no problems with transcending religions, light an incense and pray for good luck. You are there for the CNY so why not celebrate it the way Chinese do? Because for me, this is the essence of traveling; living with the locals and indulging into their culture.

How did you celebrate CNY? Do you have any more suggestions on how to celebrate CNY in Malacca?

Mapping the History of Malacca

Tracing the narrow stretch of the Malacca River with my sight in awe and walking along the cobbled streets of Jonker and Heeren, I travel back in time when tradesmen, sailors and townfolks breathe life in this Asian gateway and unknowingly created an important chapter of history as we know today.

Malacca fueled the lucrative spice trade during the 15th century between China and India on one side and the Middle East on the other. The Portuguese, Dutch and British were captivated by the strategic location of Malacca, conquered it and contributed to the formation of its identity. Centuries after, their influences remain evident on the daily Malaccan lifestyle which mesh beautifully with Malay and Chinese culture.

The Fugitive, the Tree and the River

“In 1396, a Sumatran prince by the name of Parameswara fled his country out of fear of the attacking Majapahit Empire. Landing in Temasek, he killed the local ruler and established himself over the island that is now known as Singapore. A few years later, he was driven out by a Thai-controlled army and once again, was left scouting for a new piece of land.” Read more from here.

Along the way, he witnessed an amusing incident which he interpreted as a good omen. While resting under an Indian goosebery tree or locally known as melaka, he saw a mouse deer outwitting his hunting dog. This sign made him decide to stay and establish a town named Melaka meant for trading which grew in time as the more commonly Silk Road route has become dangerous for tradesmen. Malaca for the Portuguese, Malacka or Malakka for the Dutch, and Malacca for the English, the name stuck and is now officially called Melaka.

The Birth of the Peranakans

Parameswara sought protection from the Chinese to ward off Malay retaliatory attacks and allowed them to settle in Malacca. The result is an interesting mix of Islamic Malay and Chinese cultures called Peranakan. Recognizable up to now, the Peranakan culture exhibited and continues to exhibit from preserved structures and artifacts a fusion of cultures in its grandiosity. During the colonial period, the Peranakans who benefitted from the thriving trade at that time aimed to distinguished themselves from the rich colonizers by staging elaborate houses and high-end lifestyle. They manifested their wealth onto their clothing, dining and other practices. The men of the Peranakan Chinese, for example, wore their traditional Chinese clothes while their women wore intricately embroidered Malay habaya. The Peranakan cuisine is also famous as Chinese and Malay flavors blend well into a unique taste that is truly Perenakan. Also called Baba-Nyonya (meaning, ladies and gentlemen), traces of the Peranakan culture can be found in Singapore and Penang in Malaysia but is most prominent in Malacca.

Paint the Town Red, Literally!

The prestigious New York Times listed Malacca as one of the 45 places to go in 2012. Rightfully hailed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site, it is an irresistible destination for tourists, a perfect retreat for travelers and a responsive subject for photographers. The list states: “With its lantern-lighted canals and silent, narrow streets lined with decades-old ornate temples and shop houses, few places in Southeast Asia conjure romantic images of the past as effectively as Malacca, Malaysia’s oldest city.”

The Dutch Square displays Malacca’s iconic structures. Small as it is, the square exudes a captivating charm that makes me want to sit there the whole day, reliving in my mind how traders then waited at the port and met with people from different parts of the world. They exchanged not only spices and other goods but also, and more importantly, customs, language and other forms of material culture. At night, it is relaxing to watch the changing colors of the fountain and during the day, people flock in and makes the square a vibrant center of activities, sightseeing and simply admiring the age of those buildings and imagine the purposes they served.

Everywhere I look is red all over. Stadthuys, the Christ Church, the Clock Tower and the Bell Tower are all painted in a warm shade of red. It is impressive knowing they stand exactly as what they had been since mid 17th century, an admirable characteristic of Dutch architecture. I read from the guide book I was carrying with me while walking around the town that the buildings were colored as such in order to hide the ruined facades caused by the humid temperature of Malacca. Whatever the reason is, it came out beautiful and perfectly matches the warm weather and the warm people that is truly Malaccan.

The Venice of the East

A river runs through it. The tides play along. The straits of Malacca has become both its curse and its gift. A curse since conquerors got hold of this place because of its strategic location for trade and a gift because it is the identity and the soul of its existence.

The Malacca River is beautiful at night reflecting the colored lights along the banks like fireflies. As the dawn breaks, the greenery and aged structures stand in attention to honor the very reason of their presence, why they become and what they have become.

History is my opium and Malacca got me hooked.

The hotel room where Peranakans used to live in, the narrow streets where those beautiful houses are peacefully lined up, the sidewalks leading to the small bridge over the Malacca River, the River branching out to the Straits of Malacca, everything has a piece of history to tell. I feel thankful for those who exerted the efforts of preserving this little town’s cultural gems, despite being colonial. For without these efforts, I won’t be able to immerse myself in the melancholy of the past and that short present time when history converges with the future.

Malacca’s rich past does not only reflect on to the Dutch Square but stretches up to the burial hill called Bukit Cina where both Muslims and Chinese laid, side-by-side, peacefully to rest. Kubur Belanda or the Dutch Graveyard also guards the way to the top of A’Famosa or Porta de Santiago. The Portuguese forced 1,500 slaves to build this stronghold against invaders. Now considered as one of the oldest European structures in Asia, A’Famosa hurdled several attempts of destruction in the past and was able to save a small part of its former massiveness.

Merdaka Malaysia!

After a series of colonizations, Malaysia finally gained its independence in 1957 in Malacca. A quaint building with Islamic architectural features is the place where Merdaka Malaysia was first proclaimed. It is now a museum showcasing Malaysia’s path towards independence.

And this is not the only museum in town. Malacca is a haven for museums. Buildings of historical significance and other colonial representations were transformed into museums preserving the stories of Malacca’s formation, conquer and freedom.

Embracing Strangers

Malacca is a melting pot of cultures since then until now. Hotels and restaurants are staffed by individuals of various nationalities, there are more than enough options for every palate and the Dragon Year was welcomed not only by the Chinese. Like a quilt which each patch contributes to the beautiful entirety of its design, Malacca effortlessly stitched me into its multicultural identity and made me participate and celebrate diversity.

A colorful trishaw

Souvenirs

My friend, who grew up in Malacca, told me that her hometown industrialized too fast that it has become very different from what she used to live in. Shopping malls sprouted around town and cars jam the streets meant for trishaws. Industrialization conquers Malacca like the colonizers in the past. It is true. But Malacca is unique by welcoming visitors, even the conquerors, and alluring them to call Malacca their home. The malls sit beside historical sites without obstructing them, cars run through the streets without displacing the trishaws and travelers feel at home by the hospitality of the locals.

Invaders, in any form, may enter this cradle of Malaysian culture yet it will never succumb but will continue to transform the unfamiliar and embrace them as their own.

The new, fully airconditioned DFA, Aseana building.

Everything is easier and more convenient these days, especially in obtaining important documents, thanks to the internet and other technological innovations. Gone were the days when you have to haggle with photobooth operators, queue up and roast under a covered basketball court, and spend endless hours, or even days, to submit a Philippine passport application to DFA.

Last year, I had my passport renewed for the second time. I had my passport in 1997 and I still remember those excruciating hours with my father, I was a minor then and my first time to travel out of the country. The first time I renewed was in 2007 and I had someone renew my passport. That’s the time when personal appearance is not yet a requirement for application. It was convenient, especially for those who are working for the government or know someone inside the department, but a lot riskier when it comes to border security.

It is important to check this link first. You will find a more comprehensive information there. I am just summarizing the requirements and process here and at the same time share my experience in getting one.

For both new and renewal application, here are the basic requirements:

1. Birth certificate by NSO in SECPA (click here for NSO certificates);
2. Application form;
3. Old passport (for renewal)
4. IDs; and
5. Additional documents (Click for new application and renewal).

Easy steps:

1. Set an appointment here and print the application form as instructed. Don’t forget to sign the form. You can cancel your appointment online. In case you decide to cancel it a few days before your appointment, the system won’t allow the cancellation. You can set a new appointment then which cancels your previous one. A valid e-mail is important!

Tip: Based on my experience, appointments on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursday, around 5:00-5:30pm have the shortest queues. Arrive at least 30 minutes before appointment. My schedule was 5:30pm and they entertained me even before my appointment time. How to get to DFA ASEANA?

2. Enter thru Gate 2 of Aseana building (the new building for the DFA’s Consular Affairs).Warning: Don’t deal with fixers! The guards will direct you where to go and signs are located everywhere. Don’t hesitate to ask around.

Map via passport.com.ph

3. Present your documents to a staff right stationed before the entrance of the processing section located at 1st floor. You will be given a number upon appointment confirmation.
4. Head to the processing section still on the 1st floor where you will present your form and other documents once your number has been called.
5. Pay the processing fee (P950 for 15 working days and P1,200 for 7 working days). The cashier is located at the second floor.
6. Present your receipt and have your photo taken at a designated computer. This is the reason why physical appearance is required. No accessories, or any kind of head gears except for religious purposes and no smiling please!
7. Pay a P120 delivery fee if you opt to have your passport delivered instead of picked up. Keep your receipt!

That’s it! All you have to do is wait for the release of your passport. Make sure that on the expected date of delivery, you have a signed authorization letter for someone to claim it on your behalf when you’re not at home or at the office. You will be issued a biometric passport valid for 5 years. Its security features include a hidden encoded image, an ultra-thin, holographic laminate and a tamper-proof electronic microchip. The Philippine government started issuing biometric passports starting late 2009.

Outside the Aseana building, vendors are selling passport covers for only P40. Of course, you could haggle! I find no harm buying from them.

TIP: Other things you need to bring with you: bottled water if, unfortunately, the queues are long, a pen, and lots of patience!

A passport is a valuable identification document. I suggest securing one even though you have no plans of leaving the country in the near future. And for those who were bitten by the travel bug, it is important that your passport is updated and validity is at least 6 months before you travel.

Don’t hesitate to pitch in your comments, tips and questions. Good luck and have safe travels!

What I love about Kuala Lumpur, other than its cultural diversity, is its skyline at night. I had the opportunity to see the two faces of the city: the bustling daytime when people rush to work to their towering offices and still the bustling night life when the lights of the same towering offices guide them back home.

My first day at Kuala Lumpur was spent strolling around Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC) and a dinner at Chinatown. The second one was for hopping around town while admiring the contrast of the blinding lights and intimidating heights of the city with the dark, serene night sky.

The day rises…

Man-made lake at KLCC

The most famous landmark in Malaysia, hailed as the tallest building from 1998 to 2004 and still considered as the tallest twin buildings in the world, the Petronas Twin Towers are imposing structures amidst the urban skyline of Kuala Lumpur. I did the obligatory photo ops, strolled inside the KLCC mall, rested beside the manmade lake and dipped my feet into the wading pool. But I waited for the sun to set just to see the twin towers at night.

My patience paid off as I was struck in awe by the beautifully lit towers, like sparkling diamonds, untarnished and proud in its perfection. It doesn’t need unconventional engineering or architectural gimmicks to catch attention. The lights it exudes highlight the sophistication of its slender design. I admired the building in every angle and with every turn of our car, I kept following it, never wanting to let it go out of my sight. With its picture impressed in my mind, I keep on admiring the most beautiful creation of urbanization I have ever seen.

I also admire the minds behind it. And I was surprised to find out that one of the designers of the Twin Towers is a Filipino-Malaysian engineer, Deejay Cerico, together with Argentine Cesar Pelli. The design is under the consultancy of J.C. Guinto and Filipino designer Dominic Saibo. (More info.)

The photos may do part of the talking. But these brief captures are nowhere near the magnificence of what I’ve seen. Like diamonds, I hope that these towers will continue to shine through the years and to stir admiration from more visitors like me.

TOTAL EXPENSES

   1,490.31 MYR including plane tickets

20,521.64 PHP

      475.06 USD

ACTUAL DAILY EXPENSES (7 days; minus plane tickets and travel taxes)

    100.81 MYR per day

1,388.09 PHP

      32.17 USD

Gong Xi Fa Cai! I’m back from my weeklong vacation in Malaysia and I can’t wait to share my experiences there as I get to celebrate Chinese New Year with my friend and her family (Chinese Malay is one of the many groups in Malaysia, an info for those who are not aware of this country’s diversity), well, minus the firecrackers since it has been banned by Malaysian law way back.

The first thing I want to do is a post-accounting of my travel expenses as inspired by Nina Fuentes of justwandering.org and Carrie and Zach of La Aventura Project. I feel proud of myself that I was able to note every detail of my expenses there. This practice made me realize that there are other unnecessary expenses I could shed off (tips for my next trip) without compromising fun and travel opportunities.

I used the local currency (Malaysian Ringgit/MYR) in the computation then converted it to my own (Philippine Peso/PHP) as incorporated in the table below. I based the exchange rate on 1 MYR to 13.77 PHP; of course, exchanging my currency at local money changers gave me lower rates but I didn’t mind since I don’t have millions to think about. :) I categorized my expenses into nine and its corresponding details as seen below.

Transportation (International)

My plane tickets are not promo fares and I even booked my return ticket a mere 2 weeks before my trip thus soaring the price. Cebu Pacific often offer promo fares so if you have clear travel plans months ahead, it’s good to grab these discounts. Tip: Plan ahead and book discount fares.

Transportation (Domestic)

Malaysia has cheap and convenient transportation modes. I’m lucky to have my Malaysian friend with me as she knows all about Kuala Lumpur train and bus routes! Tip: Travel with a local and experience local culture firsthand.

Kuala Lumpur trains offer postpaid cards which is convenient as there is no need to pay for every ride. Tip: Estimate how much you will need for the entire trip and reload as necessary. You don’t want those unspent load credits.

Taxis are affordable with a flagdown rate of 3MYR. We took taxis to and from train stations. Tip: Taxi rates in Malaysia double after midnight. Be a Cinderella and save bucks!

Kuala Lumpur’s international airport is situated about an hour and a half from the city. Buses are available for only 8MYR one way. Tip: Ask around where to buy the tickets. English speakers are everywhere in Malaysia.

I included my transportation expenses to and from the Manila airport. I headed to the airport during a weekday rush hour so I decided to take the train (faster and cheaper and I only have a single backpack to worry). At the last station, I took a taxi straight to the airport. This saved me around 200PHP. From the airport, I took metered airport taxis costing me 270PHP. I prefer this option because it is cheaper (gas prices to and from the airport if I ask someone to fetch me is surely pricier) and convenient (no need to haggle with other cab drivers waiting at the departure section). Tip: Take trains if possible and metered taxis are cheaper, more convenient and less of a headache.

Travel Taxes

This part includes Philippine International Travel tax (1,620PHP) and Airport tax/Terminal Fee (750PHP). With the sad state of our international airport, I wonder where all these taxes go. But starting February this year, Terminal Fee will be reduced to 550PHP. I didn’t pay for any taxes or fees at the Malaysian airport. Tip: Demand an explanation from the Philippine government regarding airport taxes.

Souvenirs

There is no way I can avoid this part of my expenses. Since I am concerned about my luggage weight, I opted for small and light souvenirs such as magnets, bookmarks and coasters. Tip: Shop at KL Sentral’s Central Market and along the Jonker Street of Malacca.

Snacks and Drinks

I splurged a bit here. I love hanging out in coffee shops, people watching, chatting with my friend, or just reflecting about my experiences. Tip: Try local coffee shops. They are cheaper alternatives to international brands and you get to taste local drinks. Malaysia’s local white coffee is a must-try at Old Town’s Coffee Shop located everywhere in Kuala Lumpur and Malacca.

Accommodation

I splurged for our accommodation at Malacca which is personally acceptable as my friend graciously hosted my stay in Kuala Lumpur. We stayed at Baba House along Heener street, a beautiful and traditionally designed hotel with free breakfast. For 158MYR a night, it is expensive compared to budget hotels and inns located near the center of Malacca but my friend generously shared the accommodation expenses with me and that halved the hotel cost. Tip: Book at least a day before especially during holidays and explore other budget hotels if you want to cut down your expenses. Share room with a friend.

Meals

I get to save a bit in this part, especially for breakfasts, because I stayed in my friend’s house and every morning her mom treats me to traditional Malay and Chinese breakfast. But generally, meals in Malaysia are cheap. In Melacca, I treated my friend in a posh restaurant and spent only 29MYR or 300PHP. Tip: Try the Malaysian traditional breakfast food called Nasi Lemak.

Entrance Fees

I spent for an entrance fee only once and that is when we went to Aquaria. It was an alternative for our Petronas Twin Towers entrance as tickets for that day ran out when we arrived there. Tip: Buy your Twin Towers tickets at least a day before.

Others

Where do I start? Hahaha! I am ashamed that I spent 85MYR for a traditional Chinese fully-body aromatherapy massage (I admit that having a relaxing massage is one of the luxuries I cannot give up especially when I’m in a new place) and 50MYR for a little gambling at Genting Highlands’ casino. I also forgot to bring my painkillers so I bought a pad of that when my migraine attacked me on our way to Malacca. Tip: Don’t forget to bring medicines and gambling is bad for your pockets!

Malaysia has no culture of tipping. I’m a happy traveler!

There you go! I hope I was able to help you estimate your budget in case you plan to go to Malaysia. If you’ve been there, feel free to share other tips and lessons learned from your experience.

More about Malaysia, hotel reviews and food reviews in my next posts.

Let me share some of my strategies on how to pack a 7-kilo luggage for a ton of adventure without compromising cost and comfort. Continue reading »

I am not Chinese but tomorrow I will go to Malaysia, meet my Chinese Malay friend and celebrate the Chinese New Year with her and her family on 23rd. Although it is considered a holiday in the Philippines, thanks to the huge Filipino Chinese population, this will be my first time to participate in a traditional/authentic Chinese New Year.

I will spend a week in Malaysia and the last thing I want to worry about is my luggage. I am an advocate of light traveling. I always opt for comfort over fashion and I consider myself a practical traveler. So my personal challenge is to pack all I need in a backpack not exceeding the 7-kilo limit of my baggage allowance (I saved 350PHP one way for that). Even though I have a 15-kilo limit for my departure, I decided not to claim that since I don’t want my friend to wait for me while I claim my luggage.

Some of you may be more experienced than me when it comes to traveling lightly but let me share some tips on how to pack a 7-kilo luggage for a ton of adventure without compromising cost and comfort (some may suggest buying all the necessities at your destination, but I always prefer bringing my own as they are cheaper and “familiar”) .

1. No need to overdress!

(1) As advised by a friend, I rolled my clothes and held them with rubber bands. You can also use vacuum pack! (2) These are 1-week worth of clothes. (3) And look how much space I still have in my backpack!

It is important to be informed of your destination’s weather forecast. I heard that it will be hot in Malaysia around this time so I’m packing light/thin clothes giving me more luggage space. I also included clothes that I can mix and match. For example, my 3 tops could be mixed and matched into 5 different outifts. I won’t bring jeans as these are too heavy and difficult to wash if needed. Here are the clothes I will bring with me: 6 tops, 1 pair of slim pants, 7 pairs of undies, 2 sleeping dresses and a hanky.
(I didn’t include those I will wear during the flight: a top, a pair of pants and a shawl; instead of bringing a heavy outerwear, a shawl is a lighter alternative).

2. Multi-purpose accessories or none at all.

(1) My accessories; I just feel naked with them. (2) Toiletries; (3) Accessories and other toiletries; (4) Everything in a small pouch!

I love accessories and I love color-matching them with my clothes. But doing so defeats my purpose so I will bring a multi-colored set that will match all my outfits. I have 2 ponytails, 2 thin headbands, 2 rings, 2 extra bracelets and another set of earrings. I will wear my watch so that doesn’t count in the packing. I don’t wear much make-up so I only have an eyelash curler, eyeliner and one small eye make-up for the new year’s party!

Believe it or not, that pouch contains the my accessories and the following: toothbrush and toothpaste, facial wash, cotton pads and buds, toner and moisturizer, sanitary pads and liners, shampoo and conditioner, body wash, tissue, alcohol, medicine and vitamins and lotion.

I suggest bringing sachets instead of bottled liquids so you won’t have to bring back with you the containers. For the other liquids (such as alcohol and toner), I transferred them into recycled tiny bottles that I could afford to leave behind.

3. Essentials only.

(1) My camera, cellphone, chargers, USB to save my photos in case I run out of memory. (2) My passport, tickets, travel diary (my ultimate travel companion!) and a pen for filling up forms. (3) A good read to while the time away at the airport; choose a small and thin book relative to the length of your travel.

The first page of my Malaysia Travel Diary ^_^

Other things I will bring with me:
a. I will wear a pair of closed shoes for my flight (no rubber shoes as they are too heavy; besides, I don’t expect any running or any strenuous activity) and I will bring a pair of walking slippers for all those strolling;
b. my ever-reliable sunglasses;
c. souvenirs for my friend;
d. IDs; and
e. most importantly, cash and cards!

Do you have other tips you want to share? Throw your comments and let’s learn from each other.

Wishing everyone a Happy Lunar New Year!

I remember sitting on our lounges with my classmates hailing from all parts of the world commenting that the Philippines has the best tourism videos they've seen so far. They are unique, witty and most importantly, inviting. However, the current administration is trying too hard to replace the previous one and is giving us a series of disappointments. We don't need to replace something that is already beautiful and has lifted Philippine pride just to claim that we did something new or to merely add up to our list of unsubstantial achievement or to feed our gluttonous ego. Continue reading »

(Disclaimer: I’m not a visual artist nor an advertising guru. I’m just a simple Filipino <del>sharing my opinion on</del> ranting about the recently launched tourism advertisement of the Philippines.)

Evolution should equate to development and diversification as we all know. However, with the recent blunders of the Department of Tourism ad campaigns, I cannot help but feel disappointed and outright insulted seeing that these campaigns are actually devolving to the dark pits of copycat artists and unmindful decisionmakers.

Above was the award-winning (ITB and WTM) campaign strategy slogan actively promoted by then Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Dick Gordon since his appointment in 2001 under former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo‘s administration. The layout and graphics are clean and simple but at one glance you can be immediately informed that the Philippines is an archipelago of 7,101 islands with an array of activities to choose from for nature-lovers, adventure-seekers and culture buffs alike. It has several versions as you can see below.

More than that, the catchphrase of this campaign, i.e. More Than The Usual, with its well-thought-of videos, graced international channels. I remember sitting on our lounges with my classmates hailing from all parts of the world commenting that the Philippines has the best tourism videos they’ve seen so far. They are unique, witty and most importantly, inviting, which is something curious travelers seek for in choosing their destinations. What is more than the usual that I need to find out? Check out the video below.

The Wow Philippines website is still working and consistently being updated. I’m happy; at least we still have memories of how well we’ve done in the past.

Late last year, DOT released a replacement to the much-embraced “Wow Philippines: More Than The Usual” Slogan. The ostentatious launched left most of us asking, “That’s It?” “Have I seen this before? and “This is what the hype is all about?”

I’m not against the use of our own language (Gosh! I love Filipino so much that I think it is one of the most beautiful languages in the world. And yes, of course, that’s a biased opinion.) but it defeats the purpose of communicating with foreigners. Alright, they have that footnote translating what “Kay Ganda” means, thank you. With the proper intonations, another thank you. But where’s the translation of “Pilipinas”? Don’t say that it’s obvious or common sense. It is important that we make them for international travelers and not for us, as one of my colleagues opined. It would have been a good ad though for local travelers.

It’s kitschy stuff. I apologize for saying that. The colors are too predictable and messy. The slogan tells only one thing, and that is we are a tropical country. Other than that, the cartoonish waves, the sun, the smiling coconut tree and that awkward tarsier don’t help at all. It failed in communicating what our country can offer. It failed to epitomize the beauty of the Philippines.

To add insult to injury, the ad was accused of plagiarism. Poland and Maldives’ slogans surfaced in the online discussions. DOT denies the alleged copying saying that “there are enough elements in the Pilipinas logo to differentiate it from that of Poland,” and “the color schemes and visual elements are markedly different.” Good thing they didn’t say “our coconut tree is smiling,” “we have a cute tarsier climbing the letter i,” “our waves are not perfectly parallel” or “we have a footnote!” I somehow understand this excuse because anything that is too common can be easily accused of plagiarism. Then that leaves me to a conclusion that this slogan truly lacks ingenuity. Hereunder are that of Poland’s and Maldives’. What do you think?

Criticisms from citizens and even senators hurt this rebranding too much that DOT decided to revert back to the Wow Philippines logo while revising their latest brainchild. So, lo and behold, I offer you the latest DOT slogan to welcome us this new year:

The website, which is yet to be completed, also contains photos/headers citing how much more fun it is to spend the holiday in the Philippines.

Some says that this new slogan is another copy from the 1951 Swiss saying “It’s more fun in Switzerland.”

DOT Secretary Ramon Jimenez, for the second time, defends that this revised tourism slogan is not a product of plagiarism but a mere coincidence since “it’s more fun” is a common expression. He tweeted that “No one can own the expression “it’s more fun” but it’s very true for the Philippines so it becomes ours.” He even added that the reason why “tourism is successful in Thailand is because their positive voice is louder than their negative voice.” Though well-defended and others are happy with it, still some people cannot silence their dismay over this series of blunders. And I’m one of those for some reasons.

First, the fact that the negative voice is louder than the positive voice screams that there’s something wrong. We, Filipinos, are known to be opinionated. We are neither afraid to criticize even the most powerful in this land nor shy to praise and pride those that are worthy of.

Second, in less than a year, the current administration has already been accused of 3 unmindful copying: these 2 tourism campaigns and the new Philippine peso bills which, though recognized as one of the best new currencies in the world in terms of design and security, received comments that it looks a lot like euros. I have graduated from my dismay over this after realizing that no matter how much I try to spend those new ones so I could keep them out of my sight, soon enough, we will all be using these new notes.

Third, and in purely political sense, I am quite sick of this administrations’ misaligned priorities. It seems that our president, Benigno Aquino III, is taking fancy of renovations for the sake of legacy. We don’t need to replace something that is already beautiful and has lifted Philippine pride just to claim that we did something new or to merely add up to our list of unsubstantial achievements or to feed our gluttonous ego.

There’s nothing wrong with change but I believe that we’re exhausting our efforts and limited resources over wrong priorities. You want to start with tourism? Our main international airport is still deteriorating, pollution and heavy traffic are expected travel companions, our airline flag carrier is at the brink of bankruptcy, travelers are still wary of some Mindanao provinces tainted with terrorist threats, and even those traffic signals that aren’t working—there’s more important things to change in this land other than simple slogans, currency designs and names of roads. Indeed this country is fun, beautiful and more than the usual. And we are a lot more capable of greater things.

(Again, I am no expert. I’m just one of those negative voices. And I have a positive voice waiting for the right moment to be heard.)

We just bid goodbye to that loooong Christmas Holiday, at least in Filipino perspective, and we are about to welcome the summer holidays in a couple of months. I’m hearing sun, sands and more spending! To recover from your recent splurges, I want to share some habits I kicked and how I was rewarded an all-expense paid vacation afterwards.

Being a scholar in one of the most expensive countries in the world stripped me off of the daily luxuries I was used to when I was a parasitic daughter living with my parents and paying for nothing except my own unnecessary comforts. Fancy dinners every weekend, Starbucks coffee more than once a week, cellphone postpaid plans that I can’t even completely consume, branded apparels, car maintenance, magazine subscriptions, visits to the spa…let me stop here. There’s no need to open up old wounds.

I have visited a number of travel blogs and I admire the courage of those people traveling alone and oftentimes wonder how they can afford to travel as frequent as they can, well, unless you are a cabin crew, someone who just inherited a handsome amount from a long-lost grandmother or your job requires you to be a jetsetter which are pretty explainable why you can.

Photo credit: financiallysmitten.com

Then it hit me! I was able to save a lot these days which I wasn’t able to do before mainly because I have lived a more, not frugal but, practical lifestyle. Being a student who relied solely on monthly stipends, I felt the need to turn off the light or faucet when not in use and I learned how to carefully budget my money with extra savings for my vacation escapades. These are some of the facets of my practical lifestyle. You might be familiar with these but the reason why they appear here again is because they are helpful to me and, definitely, to you too.

Image from greenbuddy99.wordpress.com

1. Homemade food is always cheaper and healthier. I never learned how to cook, even steam rice, until I find myself starving unless I try heating the pan and frying anything my common sense dictates could be fried. Mind you, I cried while eating the first meal I cooked unsure whether my tears are happy tears or because I burned my food. With time, practice and patience, I learned how to cook more palatable dishes. Alongside that, I learned that for every meal I prepare, I am able to save from dining out-related expenses such as transportation costs, service charge, parking fee, etc.

~~~~~
Coffee cartoon by Todd Zapoli
2. Brew your own coffee. When I get tired of 3-in-1 sachets, I drip my own coffee. Not only do I realize my dream of being a professional barista (uhm!) but I do save at least a hundred pesos (around 2USD) for every cup.
~~~~~

Image from glasbergen.com

3. Get your money back from unused postpaid plans. Of course, you cannot have a refund for postpaid plans. But you can opt for a prepaid one. When I had a monthly plan for my cellphone usage, I either exceeded my plan or used less than what I paid for. But now, my prepaid usage allows me to monitor and control my SMS and calls. I get similar service for what I actually pay for.

~~~~~
Image from funsizedcomics.com
4. Beauty over brand.  Unless you want to wear the same shirt 5 years from now, then skip this part. When I was packing my things for my 2-year study, I had a hard time discarding those expensive clothes that I can even count with my own fingers how many times I have worn. With a heavy heart, I gave them away because I do not want to be seen with the same clothes after several years. (I’m telling you, those quality ones are really durable!) These days, brand is not my primary requirement in buying clothes, but how flattering they are and how long I want to keep them in my closet.
~~~~~

5. Earn each step you take. Earn carbon credits*, extra muscles and resistance and some bucks for your every decision of having a carpool to work, walking that short distance, or taking a public transportation. Eversince I embraced this lifestyle, I get to know my city more, understand and share with the struggles of the commuters brought by the daily rush hour and, most importantly, contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions. Let me hear a “hurrah!” for that. Can I add that since then I don’t have to worry about car maintenance, annual registration and oil price hikes. [*The use of the term "carbon credit" is for artistic/exaggeration purpose.]

~~~~~
6. Take advantage of the internet. I used to have monthly subscriptions of Time Magazine, Reader’s Digest, Preview and Cosmopolitan magazines. I have ditched them long back. What for? The internet, with free information from reliable websites, is easily accessible these days. I would understand if you are a collector, though.
~~~~~

7. Find a way of relaxation minus the hefty cost. I used to pamper myself with spa visits whenever I feel my “self-induced stress”. Stress is all in the mind. When you need to relax, you don’t have to go to expensive spas. Close your eyes or read a book or do something that you enjoy. If your way of relaxation is to travel, get going!

~~~~~
To prove how effective this lifestyle change is, I currently have enough savings for a trip to Europe, a dive in Maldives, or a cruise around South America (maybe later because I’m saving for something more important and “magical”). I even have enough savings to buy the latest gadgets, or pay a downpayment for a new car or condominium unit, or shop ’til I drop (but I won’t because I don’t need them).
Let me get this straight. I’m not promoting a stingy lifestyle, but a practical one. I still splurge once in a while, but less frequently than what I used to do. I dine out once or twice a month instead of every weekend. I cut off my magazine subscriptions but I still buy new books (I love books!). I veer away from unnecessary expenses that whenever I see something I want to buy, I always ask myself, “Do I NEED this NOW?” If no, adieu! If not yet, hasta la vista! And if yes, a content smile.
I guess it’s also a matter of priorities. I prefer the intangible life lessons I get from traveling, meeting new people, and immersing in a different culture than the materialistic ideals of a consumerist lifestyle.
Love at first sight. It does happen. Maybe not with a person but with something more profound than that. I fell in love with a place at first step, first breath, first sight.
Back in 2007, I told myself that I will buy a plot of land and live in this place until old age. Davao City has all the conveniences of urbanization minus the ones we try to escape from. I was ambitious then, thinking that owning a property by myself before I turn 25 is pretty achievable. Not until reality showed its fangs when I realized that even maintaining an old manual car is too burdensome for me. But I thank my ambitions for bringing me where I am now.
Alright, going back to my main point, you might ask what’s unique about Davao that I’m ready to move out of the city where I was born, educated and worked in, I have to warn you that my explanation may be detached. I cannot say that you have to go there to experience it because personal experiences differ from one person to another and experiences are shaped by our own life history. Davao City may not meet the expectations of some or even surpass that of others but mine was simply beautiful.
It is a calm morning. Cold. The city is vast (it is the largest city in the Philippines in terms of land area), roads are wide and greenery sits comfortably within the boundaries of the city. There’s a sense of security. I feel like I can walk along the pavements without worry, something I dare not do in Metro Manila, if I have a choice. The smell of fresh fruits is inviting, filling my other senses. It is not suffocating. And I feel free. In 2007, I fell in love and left my heart in Davao City.
Last November 2011, I get the chance to fall in love the second time and search the place where I left my heart years back but it was too short of a trip that I wasn’t able to find it. I wasn’t able to find it because I was meant to go back and fall in love over and over again.
Aside from bringing the best travel buddies and the best Nihongo level you could muster, here are my tips on celebrating New Year's Eve in one of the best cities in Japan. Continue reading »
Another year is about to end and I’m already thinking of what resolutions to make that I won’t break and how I’m going to welcome the coming year. For the past 3 Christmases and New Years, I was out of the Philippines so I decided that this coming New Year’s Eve, I will spend it with the most important people in my life, my family, and promised them that I won’t fly out this holiday season.
Around this time in 2009, I was busy finishing the first draft of my master’s thesis and the same time planning for the trip I’ve longed to have since I arrived in Japan. I told myself then that I won’t leave Japan without visiting Hiroshima. I have become a history fan especially of past warfares and Hiroshima played a crucial role in shaping military warfare and strategy and, consequentially, the peacekeeping efforts of international players.
So after barely finishing my thesis draft and hastily booking hotels and buying bus and train tickets, I was off to Hiroshima to welcome 2010.
1. Take advantage of group discounts and other transportation discounts. During school holidays, JR offers “juhachikippu” for only 11,500 yen good for 5 people.  This is a one-day pass for almost all local trains. This will save you a lot if you foresee connecting trains from one city to another. Within Hiroshima are lines of streetcars which offer day passes available at the train station and some hotels around the city. This will give you significant discounts if you plan to visit as many places as you can in a day and a lot cheaper compared to purchasing individual tickets.
2. Go to the nearest temple. We’ve waited for the New Year’s countdown at Hiroshima Gokoku Shrine. The shrine was crowded with people lining up to make their wishes. So it’s better to go as early as you can so you’ll be able to line up, make a wish and hit the temple’s gong, a common Japanese religious practice. Food stalls are everywhere selling Japanese food and it was heaven for me as I love trying out new dishes.
3. Try Hiroshima’s okonomiyaki. Speaking of food tripping, Hiroshima is famous for its okonomiyaki and oysters. I love okonomiyaki, the Japanese version of pancakes mixed with a variety of ingredients such as squid, shrimp, vegetables, noodles, oyster sauce, fish flakes and mayonnaise. Yum! I even made a How Not to video about okonomiyaki ^_^.
4. Line up for free sake available at the shrine. Hiroshima is cold in this time of the year. So aside from wrapping yourself with the thickest socks, gloves, scarves, hats, ear muffs (yes, they are all necessary), grab a cup of hot sake to warm you up. It’s truly helpful fighting off the biting winter chill.
5. Be a kid again and check out Hiroshima Dreamination. It runs from November 6 to January 3 annually and we were fortunate to see its bright displays and creative illuminations.  Around 25 brightly lit exhibits lined up along Ekimae-dori Avenue free for everyone to see. Some of the exhibits are interactive and has musical accompaniment.
6. Relax and prepare for the next day. The best way to cap off a fun night is a dip in an onsen, a Japanese hot spring bath. Most hotels have their own onsen and ours have one so we spent about an hour relaxing our feet tired from walking and sweating off fats from too much eating before hitting the sack.
How will you spend the coming New Year? I will be happy to read your plans and tips too! A super advance Happy New Year to all of you!
=========
Notes:
1. I posted about my Winter Break Vacation before but I realized that it’s better to give a more detailed account of each city I visited during that trip. This will be the first of a series of posts about it.
2. Not all photos were taken by me (but I edited all of them); some might have been taken by my travel buddies. We consolidated our winter trip photos making it difficult to note who took what. Thanks guys!
